PYBL is a volunteer, non-profit organization serving children in grades 3 through 12 residing in Poway and the surrounding communities. We also offer a Challenged Division for our special needs players as well as a Hot Wheels Division for our wheelchair bound players. We are a recreational league as opposed to a competitive or traveling one. There are no tryouts or skills assessments. We are dedicated to providing a safe environment in which kids can learn and enjoy the game of basketball. We encourage and emphasize good sportsmanship, the development of individual skills and the importance of teamwork. PYBL supports the Character Counts Program.
REGISTRATION: Forms will be available online in September. Returning players will receive a registration form in the mail.
FEES: Registration fees are $80 for the first child and $75 for each additional child. Late fees are $100 per player. These fees go towards jerseys, training clinics, individual and team pictures, program books, insurance, and rental of the gyms.
GAMES: Our season consists of about 10 games, usually beginning on the first weekend in January and ending in mid-April. Games are played on Saturdays between 8 AM and 5 PM or on Sunday afternoons Noon to 5 PM. Usually a team plays only one game a weekend. However, on occasion, game scheduling may require a team to play on both a Saturday and Sunday. There are no PYBL games scheduled on Super Bowl Sunday.
PRACTICES: Teams begin their practices after December 1st The times, frequency and locations of the practices are determined by a team’s coach.
UNIFORMS: Each player will be provided a team jersey. It is up to each player to provide a solid black pair of shorts. Players should wear non-marring shoes. No watches, jewelry, or hair pins are allowed. Players with braces are encouraged to wear mouth guards and those wearing glasses are encouraged to wear eyeglass straps.
CLINICS: we offer a training clinic for boys, a separate clinic for girls, as well as clinics for all scorekeepers, timekeepers and coaches (new and returning).
GYMS: All games will be played at either Twin Peaks Middle School (14640 Tierra Bonita Road Poway) or at Meadowbrook Middle School (12320 Meadowbrook Lane, Poway). No food, gum or drinks are allowed in the gyms. Only capped (preferably pop-up caps) water bottles are permitted.
PLAYOFFS: All teams in the 5th through 12th grades, regardless of their won-loss record, participate in the playoffs. There are no playoffs for the 3rd and 4th grades.
REFEREES: The referees are comprised of trained high school and college students.
SCHOLARSHIPS: PYBL offers financial aid for qualifying Poway area families. Please write a brief note to the commissioner for your son or daughter’s grade explaining your situation.
