ABOUT THE CHALLENGED DIVISION

The Challenged Division of the Poway Youth Basketball League is open to all players with intellectual disabilities.  The division has been around for over 15 years and has grown from a handful of players to more than 75 athletes.

Groups.  The Challenged Division is divided into 3 groups.  The first group is for beginning players, those that need a little extra help, or those who prefer a little slower pace during our games.

The second group is for players who have played with us before or who have more developed skills and don’t require quite as much one-on-one supervision.

Our third group is primarily for our older athletes – high school and above.  They play games with little or no supervision.

Time/Place.  The league runs from January through March and our division meets on Tuesday evenings.  We play at Meadowbrook Middle School in Poway.  The first group starts at 5:30 PM, the second group starts at 6:40 PM, and the last group starts at 7:45 PM.  Anyone is welcome to come and watch us play.

Volunteers.  We encourage volunteers from the community to assist us.  High school students can get community service hours for their help. We believe teens will have a new and unique awareness of their peers with disabilities as they become involved in our program.  This is a very positive atmosphere for all.  As a volunteer, be prepared to have a very rewarding experience.

Our athletes enjoy playing basketball and are very social.  You will see lots of smiles and high fives from the time warm-ups begin through the end of a game.  The enthusiasm they show is very infectious.  C’mon in for some fun!
